What is the magnitude of MMIW?

IMG_E0984_edited.jpg

Salient Silhouettes is art project with the intent to engage with the MMIW movement by having the figures stand in the shape of the iconic hand print that people have been using over their mouths to be the voice for the Indigenous women. The MMIW is a movement that was created to bring awareness to the murdered or missing indigenous women in North America.

The problem has existed for generations and very few things have been done to solve it. So, what is the magnitude of this problem? What can be done to represent this? There is very inaccurate data, due to cases being tampered with or lack of agency.

"This started with the goal of making a sculptural art piece representing each indigenous person missing or murdered in my own way. Bringing my own form of respect and honor to those who have gone too soon. I wanted the information of where they were from or where they were last seen or found to be included on the art piece. To allow people to grasp the magnitude of this problem. To see and hold these figures, acknowledging the fact that this isn't just data but this was an actual person. We are a small amount of the Canadian Population yet make up so much of these statistics."

This art piece is not accurate due to the fact that a lot of crimes against Native people go undocumented.
